Pallet racks are an integral part of any warehouse or storage facility; they help to keep the place well organized and easy to run. That said, pallet racks can pose serious danger if the people that are around them do not take the necessary precautions. Because they usually hold heavy items at great heights they can easily cause injuries and even fatalities. Some Tips to Consider
Buy racks from a reputable supplier. Like with all other manufactured goods, there are some pallet rack manufacturers who put out cheap and unreliable products. Once stacked, these can easily break and come crashing down. Buy racks that have a reputation for being string and long lasting.
If a pallet rack is damaged it should be removed immediately. Damage commonly occurs from forklifts and racks also rust especially if the room they are in isn’t weatherproof. A rusted pallet rack is a danger because it can bring inventory crashing down at any time.
Never place more than the recommended weight on a pallet rack. They usually come with a sticker that shows how many pounds they can hold. If you surpass this there is a danger of breakage occurring.
Never use rack components from two different brands or types of racks. Each brand is manufactured for very specific parts and using a different kind may lead to breakage and accidents. It can also damage the rack itself.
Pallets must be arranged in such a way that both people and forklifts can pass though the aisles without getting in contact with them. They should not be placed in very busy areas where there is a lot of movement.
Make sure that your forklift operator is trained for the job. There is a specific kind of training that is required to handle a forklift and keep it safe.
Arrange your inventory in such a way that getting to it is easy and efficient. It reduces the amount of carrying that warehouse employees have to do. If you are not familiar with how this is done you can ask your pallet rack supplier to pay you a visit at the warehouse and demonstrate.
Your warehouse must be well lit at all times when people are working.
You should stabilize any high loads with shrink wrap.
Keep your pallets clean at all time. This way, it is easy to see when they are damaged and need to be removed. It also keeps your warehouse clean.
Under no circumstances should anyone climb atop a rack. This makes them unstable as they are not designed to support human beings.
When pallet racks are assembled for the first time it should be done by someone who is familiar with the process. Again, ask the supplying company to send you someone to do it and make sure that everything is safe.
These tips should help keep you and your employees safe. If you follow them strictly you will also find that your pallet racks last a long time.
